Year 8 Linguists Impress at Regional Finals of Modern Languages Translation Bee

Posted: 21st June 2023

On Thursday the 15th of June, two of our finest Year 8 Linguists took part in the Regional Finals of the Modern Languages Translation Bee, run by Routes Into Languages and Cambridge University. The competition was held at Avanti House Secondary School and pitted the boys against some keen Year 8 and Year 9 translators from across the capital. Adam Spitz and Carlos Camina had previously won our school competition, in which they had to translate as many sentences from English to French as possible, in a minute. Now, with the challenge of added tenses, older competitors and performing in front of a large audience they were up against it! Both of the boys stepped up to the challenge and were fantastic representatives for the school. In the finals, Carlos managed to match his personal best from practice sessions, falling just short of the top five. Adam finished in fourth place meaning that he has qualified for the National Finals, which will take place at Cambridge University on the 3rd of July. He will have the opportunity to visit the Modern Languages Faculty and then will compete against the most proficient language learners in the country. It is worth noting that the boys were among the final 45 participants from an original 4159 entrants in the London Region – meaning that they were in the top 1% in the competition. The boys should be incredibly proud of their achievements! Bravo mes amis!
