Our Resilient Young Mathematicians Overcome Challenges to Reach Quiz Club National Mathematics Championship Finals!

Posted: 26th May 2023

We had a relatively young Team (one Year 4, two Year 5 and one Year 6) enter the Quiz Club National Mathematics Championship. In the Area Heats held at UCS Junior, the Team were competing against 13 other school teams – all of which were made up of Year 6 pupil. Just as Round One was underway, it transpired that one of the buzzers was not working which led to points being lost. This problem was soon rectified; however, the impact was evident as we ended in 14th place after Round One!  Through sheer resilience and perseverance, the boys worked together to overcome all the setbacks by finishing in 4th place and securing themselves a place in the Semi-Finals! We are so proud of the boys.

On Wednesday 24th May, the boys participated in the Semi-Finals online competing against 42 other teams. The boys were faced with some rather fiendishly challenging questions but they worked together as a Team brilliantly. At the end of Round One, the boys were in 30th place after a few mishaps. Once they got into the rhythm, there was no stopping them. By the end of the final Round, the boys were in 12th position securing themselves a place in the Finals, which will be held in the Examination School of Oxford University on Monday 3rd July. Our excellent mathematicians outperformed all our local schools and progressed to the Finals alongside Merchant Taylor’s School Prep, Haberdasher’s Askes and Highgate. I am incredibly proud of my pupils – and I look forward to the fantastic opportunity that lies ahead! Well done to G, R, R and A!
