Assembly with Akash Nawbatt KC, barrister and County Court judge

It was a great privilege at the assembly last Friday to hear from Akash Nawbatt KC, barrister and County Court judge, who spoke about the different branches of the legal profession including specialist corporate lawyers dealing with acquisitions and mergers (which is quite topical at the moment!) Akash explained about the different types of law courts and how magistrates and judges work out the length of sentences. The boys were rapt as Akash got into the nitty gritty of sentencing, distinguishing between aggravating and mitigating factors as well as the role of suspended sentences. The boys understood the importance of weighing up different points of view, as practised in history and politics lessons, and how the rule of law is the bedrock of the English legal system.
