Assembly with Richard Jacques from Durham University

Posted: 26th September 2023

St Anthony’s senior boys were delighted to hear a lecture on the artist Caravaggio delivered by art historian Richard Jacques, academic at Durham University.

Richard talked us through the artist’s different styles including Naturalism as shown in, Boy with a Basket of Fruit and Tenebrism (or Chiaroscuro) exemplified in The Conversion of St Paul.

Richard’s lecture brought to life the creative passions of Caravaggio and how the genius temperament was given expression in beautiful works of art on one hand, and violent outbursts on the other.

Links with the ancient world, allegory and ethics also helped give context to Caravaggio’s paintings; the sense from today is that boys enjoyed learning about art history and its place in the great Western Canon of learning.
