“Should Qatar be allowed to host the World Cup?” – assembly lead by SH Debate Club

assembly debate held in the hall

It has been a fantastic first term for our Debate Club boys. I would firstly like to say a huge thank you to parents for supporting our extra-curricular offering at St. Anthony’s and of course to our wonderful boys for their engagement, enthusiasm and involvement!

We closed this term with an assembly on “Should Qatar be allowed to host the World Cup?”. After seeing just how many boys were following the tournament we knew that this would be an interesting topic and the boys loved exploring the arguments for and against the motion. After extensive research and discussion, a number of students volunteered to present their views to the wider school community and presented this in the form of a football match! We particularly loved carrying out a ‘VAR check’ to tackle contentious points and it was brilliant to see the boys share their wonderful work.

A huge well done to Arthur, James, Rodrigo, Dylan and Zane in year 5, Pranav, Atiksh, Ed and Miles in year 6 and to Jhun, Robert, Oliver P and Oliver F for taking part. As well as that thank you to all those who attended the club for sharing their views and supporting the wonderful work we were able to display.

We now look forward to welcoming another 20 boys to the club after the Christmas break!

Wishing you all a restful break,

Callum Finn
Head of Humanities
