At Senior House Assembly, we had a talk from Monsignor Phelim, Parish Priest of St Mary’s, Hampstead and School Chaplain, about his time as a naval chaplain during the Falklands Conflict. For our pupils and most staff, the Falklands Conflict is part of history. Phelim told us how he sailed with Task Force South and witnessed the re-taking of these British islands from the Argentinian forces which had invaded and occupied them in breach of international law. We learnt about the sinking of HMS Sheffield by an Exocet missile. Phelim ministered to the survivors of this, many of them badly burnt. He also said Mass in Latin and English for Argentinian prisoners-of-war. These men, fearful of being executed as spies, did not speak a word of English. Phelim hoped that the Mass which he said gave them some comfort in the situation in which they found themselves. The talk finished off with slides. These grainy images from the time really brought the conflict to life. We saw Phelim’s comrades, some still living, others now dead. Phelim even extolled the benefits of conflict in preserving waistlines: for keeping trim, nothing beats spending several months in a war zone! We learnt about how conflict imposes terrible isolation on the survivors, separating them from their nearest and dearest, and the psychological scars people carry with them for the remainder of their lives. This powerful talk made a strong impression on staff and pupils alike.
