Congratulations to Kamso and Alex in Year 7 for their success in the 2026 Ampleforth College National History Essay Competition. Kamso was winner of the Year 7 competition and Alex was runner-up. These are remarkable achievements. Ampleforth received over 200 entries from 25 schools across the UK. Paul Connor, Head of History at Ampleforth, has written as follows: ‘The entries this year were, once again, truly outstanding. The competition’s popularity continues to soar and the standard of the entries never ceases to amaze. Some were approaching A Level standard.’ Essays were on the very widest variety of topics, including the first Moon landing, the impact of the Napoleonic Wars, the Pendle Witch Trials, the impact of colonial expansion and the significance of Suleiman the Magnificent. The Headmaster has written this: ‘It was wonderful to read such well-researched, well-argued, well-written and simply very interesting essays. The whole aim of the competition is to encourage students to pursue a historical topic that interests them and, in so doing, to develop both their love of history and their research and writing skills. All the entries this year reflected their success in doing this. Everyone who entered, and their schools and teachers, should feel extremely proud of the essays produced and should be very encouraged with regard to their potential for success in History moving forward. Many congratulations to everyone who entered.’
