On Monday 9th December, the St Anthony’s Debating Society hosted a debating contest with Ivy House School. We debated two topics, one of which had been prepared and the other of which was announced on the day. The first topic was whether awards ceremonies should be banned in primary schools. The second topic was whether films should replace books in the teaching of English. Our pupils expressed themselves with clarity, precision and also passion.
On this occasion, they were able to persuade the judges of their superior skills. A parliamentary style of debating was adopted, allowing the pupils to understand how motions are passed in the seat of government. Pupils were particularly impressive when it came to thinking on their feet in response to some tough rebuttals by Ivy House pupils. It is planned to hold further such contests with local schools and other schools in the Inspired group over the remainder of the academic year, so look out for further postings!
